GI Community Sourcing

The GI Community Sourcing Session on 5 April 2011 at CAPIGI 2011 let to interesting talks, where in fact the discussion on sharing data that started after the manufacturing business talk within the Machine Guidance Session continued.

To prepare the audience on community sourcing the session first started with a talk from Vanessa Gosselink - Van Dijk from the Dutch Kadaster who filled the audience in on Cables and Pipelines: Reporting Back a Different Location. Here presentation can be viewed here:

Then Steffen Fritz from IISA took us to listen to his story on the Use of Volunteer Geographical Information to Improve Global Land Cover. His presentation is embedded here:

Concluding the GI Community Sourcing Session Grega Milcinski from the Slovenian company Sinergise talked about the rise of crowd sourcing. His experience is that it's important to award people in some way after they voluntary have added information. In the case of a project of theirs where volunteers created cycling maps, people that added data immediately received a figure showing how fast, etc. they were cycling. This is what should be done with farmers and their information too - immediate and useful feedback to the data providers.
